As of today eBay Inc confirmed that is has agreed to finalise the takeover of Magento Inc. The open source e-commerce platform is one of the most popular in the World, and is often integrated to shopping portals such as eBay.

Originally eBay had bought a 10% share in Magento, but this deal now pushes the online auction giant to 100% ownership, they have now announced.

Initial thoughts spring to eBay re-branding Magento as X.Commerce, their own fully open source and user friendly e-commerce platform. John Donahoe’s Magento speech confirms the purchase, but doesn’t go as far to mention a re-brand. However, it’s hard to see how they would be willing to continue funding and developing two separate developer communities pushing the same ideals and goals.

John Donahoe says more details will be revealed and discussed openly at this years annual ‘Innovate conference’, due to take place during October 12th-13th in San Francisco, California. The takeover will be complete by then.
