Since the start of the Google+ project, it’s obvious that there is massive interest in the most +1′d pages online. Never before have we been able to see a dynamic overview of the most liked content online.
The Google+1 counter button is a way of seeing how many people consider a certain web-page to be relevant, useful or likeable. This helps not just other browsers to get an idea of what’s popular, but also to gauge how new a page is.
Other benefits to having a high number of +1′s on your website is that it helps rankings. Google has already confirmed that the +1 integration to the search results is partly aimed at helping them to see what’s good content.
Their algorithm is automated, and besides the Google manual penalties that are handed out by the Webmaster team, this is the first time that we can vote for a page. This means the general public now have a hand in website rankings like never previously seen.
