Google has recently started to back many green projects. Tuesday May 24th saw them post on their official blog detailing how they are ploughing just short of $60 million to help with the construction of a 1.5 gigawatt wind farm. Google has teamed up with Citibank who will themselves underwrite the equity for the remaining costs of developing a 102mw section of the site. When the site is functional it should increase California’s wind power by as much as 30%.
The project is under construction at the Alta Wind Energy Centre in the Mojava desert, an area of weather extremes, most famous for it’s often windy days.
Investment’s by Google in clean power now stand at $400,000,000, which is no small figure. One can assume Google’s aim is to become carbon neutral although they won’t be getting any electricity from this site as Terra Gen power have a power purchase agreement in place.
